Coach Joe Luce's job now remains the same. Luce will be the dean of students at Jeffersonville, and his task is restoring Jeffersonville after the Red Devils stumbled to 20-25 the last two seasons. He’s worked similar turnarounds at Marion (where he led the Giants to the 4-A state title game in 2008 and went 92-30 in five years) and Richmond (117-33 with the school’s first regional title since 1992).
“Jeffersonville basketball stands up historically with the great programs,” said Luce, a 44-year old who will start his 17th coaching season with his fifth school. “That was something that is important to me, being involved with a program that really cherishes that history. It’s something we take on with nothing but great pride and definite respect for what has happened in the past.
“We hope to add our chapter in the near future. If we come in and do things the right way, with the right energy, the right direction with the players, we can have that kind of success here.”
Luce went 26-4 last season (the second-best record in Richmond history) before falling to Evansville Reitz in the semistate at Seymour. When he took over at Richmond, those Red Devils were coming off a 7-15 campaign – similar to the 8-14 mark his new Red Devils posted in Matt Pait’s second year. Luce has never won fewer than 14 games in any season.
“I’m taking on a challenge that needs some attention,” he said. “It’s been done before. We’re not reinventing the wheel, it’s just putting the wheels back on the cart. I’m very anxious to get started.”
